Medical Marijuana Certifications (MMJ)
More than anything else, it was the AIDS epidemic that made medical marijuana a timely and urgent matter. AIDS patients found that MMJ (AKA cannabis), an appetite stimulant, was the most effective and least toxic treatment for HIV-induced anorexia and weight loss. It also took care of the horrible side effects from the drug cocktails that saved lives but caused severe nausea. Now, we have an epidemic of addiction and overdose deaths related to the opioid pain killers such as hydrocodone and oxycontin, which doctors are reluctant to prescribe, forcing patients to turn to street heroin, which is cheaper yet more lethal.
MMJ has been a godsend for patients because it has very few side effects, is generally not addictive like the opioids and comes in several different delivery methods that patients can tailor to their own preference, and as far as I know, no one has died of an overdose!! MMJ has documented use as a medicine for at least 50,000 years. It helps reduce nausea, muscle spasms, seizures and various types of pain—from musculo-skeletal to gastrointestinal to nerve pain. It also lessens the pressure from glaucoma.
Another benefit of MMJ is that it is a plant—no synthetic chemicals anywhere! All constituents are working together to cause certain desirable effects. The sativa strains are good for daytime use and the indica strains are good to help with pain at night so a patient can experience a good night's sleep. Hybrids have unique proportions of cannabinoids used for specific symptoms.
We are so fortunate here in Arizona to have a beneficial MMJ law so patients can have an effective treatment that is safe, natural, and works for a wide range of medical conditions to provide relief of symptoms and a better quality of life.
